XAT 2012 Analysis
XAT 2012 was conducted on Sunday, January 8. The exam paper had a lot of changes compared to previous years but the difficulty level was less. The number of questions was reduced from 101 to 85. The duration of the paper was two hours. The decision-making section had no question from analytical reasoning. This year, instead of marking with pencil, test takers had to mark with pen in the OMR sheet. This means the marked answers could not be changed later and test takers had to be very careful while choosing the options.
The sections of the exam were quantitative ability & data interpretation, English language ability & logical reasoning, decision making and essay writing.
The total marks were 100. XAT continued the pattern of differential marking this year. There was 25 per cent negative marking for each wrong answer. Let us have a look at the section-wise analysis of the XAT 2012 paper.
The quantitative & data interpretation section had 28 questions of 35 marks. The topics ranged from numbers, statistics, bar charts, geometry & mensuration, simple & compound interests, averages, mixtures & allegations, special equations, ratio, proportion, variation, time & distance, Venn diagram, pie chart, percentage, profit & loss.
The English language ability & logical reasoning section had 32 questions carrying 35 marks. There were questions on reading comprehension, verbal reasoning, vocabulary and grammar. The logical reasoning area consisted of questions from strengthen/weaken arguments and sentence-based inferences.
The data sufficiency section had 25 questions carrying 30 marks. The difficulty level of this section was tough.
The candidates had to choose one out of two topics for essay writing. The topics were:
A) Poverty is a big menace in India. Due to its complexity and magnitude, most of the government initiatives fail.
B) Poverty is a consequence of failure of the government policies due to the fact that the governments do not target root causes.
